What to Expect at Your First Veterinary Specialist Appointment

Getting a referral to a veterinary specialist can feel like a big step — especially if you’ve never been to a specialty practice before. The good news is that the process is more straightforward than it might seem, and knowing what to expect can make the whole experience feel far less daunting.

Here’s a step-by-step look at what happens when you bring your pet to AVS for the first time.

Step 1: The Referral from Your Primary Vet

Most visits to AVS begin with a recommendation from your family veterinarian. Once they’ve determined that your pet’s condition would benefit from specialist evaluation, they’ll contact AVS directly to initiate the referral. This typically involves transferring your pet’s medical records, recent lab work, and any imaging (X-rays, ultrasound reports) to our team ahead of your appointment.

You’ll then receive a call from AVS to schedule your consultation. If your pet’s situation is urgent, we work to accommodate appointments as quickly as possible.

Step 2: Preparing for Your Visit

Before your appointment, it helps to:

  • Write down your questions and concerns — there are no small questions in a specialist consultation
  • Note any symptoms you’ve observed, including when they started and whether they’ve changed
  • Bring any medications your pet is currently taking
  • Confirm with your primary vet that records have been sent to AVS
  • If you have pet insurance, review your coverage and bring your policy details

Step 3: The Consultation

Your specialist consultation at AVS is thorough by design. It typically includes:

  • A complete review of your pet’s medical records and history
  • A comprehensive physical examination focused on the area of concern
  • Time with your specialist to discuss your observations and ask questions
  • A clear explanation of what the specialist believes is happening and why
  • A recommended treatment plan or additional diagnostic steps

This isn’t a quick in-and-out appointment. Specialty consultations are designed to be thorough — so plan to spend some time with us. That time is what allows us to get it right.

Step 4: Diagnostics and Next Steps

Depending on your pet’s condition, your specialist may recommend diagnostic testing during or following the consultation — such as bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasound, CT scanning, or other advanced imaging. All of these are available in-house at AVS, which means faster results and no extra trips to outside facilities.

If surgery or a procedure is recommended, your specialist will walk you through exactly what it involves, what the expected outcomes are, and what recovery will look like. You’ll receive a detailed written estimate so you can make a fully informed decision.

Step 5: Coordination with Your Primary Vet

After your consultation, AVS communicates directly with your referring veterinarian to ensure they are fully informed about our findings and recommendations. Your primary vet remains an important part of your pet’s care team — we view the relationship as a partnership, not a handoff.

Follow-up care, including post-operative check-ins, rechecks, and long-term management, is coordinated so that nothing falls through the cracks.
